Fumbling in the Dark
Finding my footing in the shadow of shame
Sometimes progress is imperceptible. It can feel like you move through months or even years and you wonder, “Will I ever grow in this area?” I have always had trouble self-soothing. While in marriage counseling over a decade ago, I was introduced to Psalm 131:
My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.
Ever since then, I have tried to call this to mind when I am feeling stressed or the panic wraps its fingers around my neck. But I never could fully understand what it looked like. In the past, I called it forth, in moments of fear and anxiety. Or in places of deep grief. But much of the time, my husband has been there, helping me find my footing again after a fall off the proverbial cliff. But it isn’t realistic to always have him there. At times, I find myself feeling guilty for always needing him. And I know it sounds a lot like, “Where’s God in this?” This isn’t to say that God is absent from my mind. I hope it goes without saying that first and foremost, I seek Him out. Oftentimes, it is me, God, and Kris. Standing together, overcoming, unlearning all the things that have held me in bondage.
But many times, when I am sitting alone pondering how I moved through moments of conflict, I reflect on the fact that I often rely on Kris to help me find my footing again. He has been such a vital part of my healing journey, and God has ordained that. But then I feel God calling me into deeper healing. I sit with the knowlege that I should be able to settle my spirit without him.
As I have tapped back into writing poetry, memories come flooding in, and poetry was a second language for me as I grew up. It is the way I sorted through hard feelings that I didn’t feel safe enough to express. It was an expression that was more than just words on a page. It helped me make sense of my life and what was happening inside. I didn’t see it at the time. Looking back, it is apparent that poetry was an outlet. Because of that, over the last couple of months, I have been writing more poetry. I have felt a pull to it. Sometimes my spirit won’t settle until I finally stop and lay the words down on the page.
So in a moment of conflict last week, after Kris left before we could resolve it—he had to lead a group so he couldn’t stay or he would have—I was left to sort through my emotions alone. Twenty years ago, ten years ago, maybe even five years ago, I couldn’t have done what I did that night. He left, and I felt the immediate pain of being abandoned in my time of need. But because I have been working at this healing thing for a few years now, I knew that I had to sort through it all without Kris.
So instead of lashing out at Kris via chat or having a panic attack because he left me, I started writing. Short sentences, filled with emotion, describing everything that was going on in my body and mind. This poem was the result.

Fumbling in the Dark
is it too much to ask you see me right now remember the morning the way i crashed out i said i was empty exhausted and worn this shell of a body betrayed once again
when you came home i was listless in bed what math did you do what calculations emerged did you see laziness an avoidance of work or do you believe that i couldn’t today
we spoke of a date but it only holds if i’m whole if i’m leading but what of the moments i can’t offer more useless and alone i’m unseen by you
the one who learned the map of my heart where did you go i had no capacity in marrow or mind to keep giving more
shame crashed down selfish once more a weary old script all about me but sometimes please can it just be
can’t you remember it has been hard you didn’t ask did i cross your mind couldn’t you sit beside me to see if i was alright
you fight disease deep in your bones i am selfish—i know as my fists raise in fear i cannot be needy i cannot be lonely i cannot be... me
i don’t want to have needs deep inside it triggers that girl and my body remembers that she didn’t matter
then you ice me out and it unearths a wound a gash that whispers that i’m not allowed to need anything i cannot rest in this shadow of shame
your standards for work higher than mine i am just human striving and stumbling in a fog you can’t see still fighting cancer you accomplish it all and somehow i wonder am i doing it wrong
the measure of success for humans like you i cannot grasp it i don’t have your grit am i just less because i have needs
i wanted to find you when i heard you arrive wanted the ritual our thursday date nights where we meet with intention to talk to eat to pray and connect
when the no fell upon me i burst open wide no to the food no to the date in my still-healing brain all i could hear all that took root— i didn’t matter
you had nothing left to hold out to me you stood there perplexed tongue-tied in shock unable to translate my chaotic thoughts
after decades together do you not know me still my heart so fragile i long to believe that you are here with me as i walk in the dark
you freely give much before i can ask so i scrape up the courage to scream out a need and the air gets heavy
i know we will speak the fog will soon clear but right now my heart is shattered in two tears falling freely somehow i wish i was more than me
the labor of asking admissions of need coaxing the words because you forget the way i am wired connection with you matters the more when my brain is on fire and the weight of the pain consumes me whole
i eke out the nerve to drop subtle clues i imply what is needed as if you will know then i speak it plain exposing the wound your stare tells the tale so i swallow the need
one hand wields love the other grips grief i am unworthy of the love you pour out you lavishly give and you give and you give
but then i get lost in the weight of my worth that burdens us both how do i offer my soul full of need not hitting your shield with incessant pleas
the edge of my wit my thunderous roar this fire this passion you know it well yet unleashed on you the shut down begins and you abandon me there just like the rest
my brain hurls the lies like a punch to the gut too much that voice bellows it pummels and shames if i don’t tame it i’m robbed of my peace
i cannot move forward without winnowing well the sadness the longing the ache to be seen beyond all the bluster to what’s underneath
